How this works: Browsers can't run real ICMP pings, so this loads each site's favicon (a tiny image) with a no-cache request and times how long the response takes. A failure means the site is unreachable from your browser — which could be the site itself, your DNS, your ISP, or a firewall blocking it. The "Your connection" indicator pings several major CDNs in parallel; if those all fail, it's almost certainly your end. If most sites are up but one is down, it's theirs.
