The military suppression of resistance to central authority in the Alevi-Kurdish region of Dersim (today's Tunceli province). Official records put the civilian dead at around 13,000, with tens of thousands deported. It is widely regarded as the bloodiest single Turkish military operation against its own population; a sitting prime minister issued an official apology in 2011.
